THE UNIONVILLE REPUBLICAN, Unionville, Missouri, Wednesday, July 25, 1973
LUCIAN LEDFORD
Lucian Ledford, son of G.F. and Martha (Garlock) Ledford, was born Nov. 10, 1886 in Elko, Putnam County, Missouri. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth where he received his early education at the Ledford School. Later he attended summer school in Unionville, completing requirements for a teaching certificate.
On Oct. 27, 1909 he was united in marriage to Mamie Leonard at the home of her parents in Unionville by John Spurgeon.
Lucian and Mamie lived in Kansas City when they first married, where he was employed as a postal clerk on the railroad, a position he held several years. Later they moved back to Putnam County, making their home in the Elko community. Here Lucian taught school for many years, seventeen in all. The schools he taught include the Martinstown, Bradshaw, Burns, Ledford, Clark, and Anders. During these years Lucian also engaged in farming.
In 1934, he and Mamie moved into Unionville, where they have since resided. For several years he was associated with the Federal Land Bank, then in 1953 was elected to the office of county treasurer, where he served efficiently until 1961, when he retired from such active work.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Henry Will Ledford; and four sisters, Essie Jones, Anna Bennett, Mattie Schuster, and Sarah Jane Martin.
Lucian is survived by his beloved wife, Mamie; five nieces and five nephews. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Valee Burns of Unionville; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Glen Leonard of Salt Lake City, Utah.
He confessed his faith in Christ many years ago, placing his membership in the Methodist Church.
Lucian had been in failing health for some time, but was hospitalized only about three weeks. He quietly passed from this life the morning of July 18, 1973 at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital. He was 86 years, 8 months and 8 days of age.
Lucian was a devoted husband whose life was above reproach. He gave his best to any task he undertook, realizing exceptionally fine results. His quiet, congenial disposition was recognized by all, as was his honesty, and integrity, which was never questioned. As a teacher, he spread great and abiding good throughout the community. He leaves sad hearts among those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 20, 1973 at the Husted Funeral Home. Interment was in the Unionville Cemetery.
