Obituary of J. W. Ferrell
"Mr. Ferrell came to Carrollton 16 years ago and with his son, Elbert, purchased the grocery business of John P. Wilson. Under the name J.W. Ferrell and Son they continued until 1918 when Mr. Ferrell's interest in the business was assumed by his other son, Stewart. Although retired, Mr. Ferrell continued to assist about the store until about a month before his death. Mr. Ferrell could recount many interesting anecdotes from his life. On one occasion in the year 1859, while helping to lay the railroad bed on the line out of Pittsburgh, Pa., he saw Lincoln's train stop at Cadiz Junction enroute to the White House. When asked for a speech, Mr. Lincoln replied with a wave of his hand that he had just enjoyed a full dinner and was consequently too full for words.

Mr. Ferrell was kind and courteous and well regarded by all who knew him."

Civil War Veteran
Enlisted in Company D 15th Ohio Infantry on April 18, 1861.
Discharged August 29, 1861.
