Mary Gamble Johnston was the daughter of Zachariah Johnston, Jr. and his second wife Mary "Polly" Brawford (See her brother in law Geo. D. Gray's obit, FaG memorial #15686721). She lost her father when she was about 15, became an educator and never married.

On the 1860 Lexington, VA census, I found Mary Johnson, 70; MARY G. Johnston, 29 and Margaret Johnston, 25, all VA born.

On the 1900 Lexington, VA census, I found MARY G. Johnston, 70, May 1830, VA born, as were her parents, owns her home and has a mortgage.

Read her obit on the right, from the Lexington Gazette, (Lexington, Virginia), dated 28 Dec 1904. She was born near Brownsburg and died in Lexington ather home. She graduated from the Ann Smith Academy and taught in both Virginia and Kentucky and ended up back at the Ann Smith Academy in Lexington. She was a communicant of both New Providence and Lexington Presbyterian churches. Mary was the granddaughter of Zachariah Johnston. She was in possession of many of his papers from his distinguished friends, like Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe, plus Gov. of Virginia "Light Horse" Harry Lee (General Robert E. Lee's father) and his son, attorney Edmund Jennings Lee.
