Susan Johnston was the daughter of Zachariah Johnston. She married Joseph W Culton, on 5 Oct 1821, in Rockbridge Co., VA. Minister James Morrison officiated. Rockbridge Co., VA Marriage Register.

Suspect that her mother was Zechariah Johnston, Jr.'s 1st wife, Jenny McMath, the daughter of Susan McMath.

On the 1850 Dist. 53, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer JOSEPH W Culton, 64; James B, 35; Margaret A, 16; Zechariah, 14; Rebecca J, 13; Mary A, 11; Joseph A, 9 and SUSAN 47, all VA born. They live next door to Ann R. (Johnston) Culton, 49 and her 3 children, aged 13 - 18: Rebecca Ann, Newton and Frances.

Rebecca J Culton, age 26, daughter of Joseph W and SUSAN Culton, married Alfred Gold, age 30, son of Jas and Eliza Gold, on 18 Jan 1865, in Rockbridge Co., VA. Rockbridge Co., VA Marriages Register, p 138.

SUSAN and J W Culton's daughter Margaret A Culton, age 28, married Wm A L Anderson, 28, son of Jas and Martha Anderson, on 28 Feb 1867 in Rockbridge Co., where they were both born.

Died, June 28th, at her residence near Brownsburg, Rockbridge county, Va., Mrs. SUSAN CULTON, widow of the late Joseph W. Culton, in the 73d yeai of her age. For more than fifty years she had been a membei of New Providence church. The last years of her life were marked by many trials: in 1869 she lost her husband, and since then three grown children— two sons and a daughter—have preceeded her to their heavenly home. Her own health also has for years been very delicate, but amid all her trials she manifested a true Christian resignation. Her faith never wavered; and when at last the summons came to her she calmly fell asleep in Jesus, without a doubt or a fear. Central Presbyterian, Vol9, #50, p 3, dated 8 July 1874.
