Oddly, I could not locate him on the 1850 census.
On the 1850 Dist. 51, Rockbridge Co., VA census I found farmer Zeckeriah (sic) Johnson (sic), 40; Zecheriah (sic) Culton, 26; living beside Mary Johnson, 58 with $10K in personal property; Charlotte Johnson, 23; Mary G Johnson, 21 and Margaret G Johnson, 18, all VA born.
On the 1870 Natural Bridge, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer Zach Johnston, 64, residing with farm laborer Zach Culton, 45.
Source of burial here: Rockbridge County, Virginia Cemeteries, South River and Walker Creek Districts, by the Rockbridge Area Genealogical Society, 1999, page 138. Says 1875, close inspection of the gravestone says 1873 instead.
Note he is buried beside his father Zechariah Johnston, 1770 -1845, who is really ZJ Jr. so he is really ZJ III. Still seeking more documentation on him.
