FARMER; LIFELONG GROTON RESIDENT; FATHER OF ELEVEN

From the Gazetteer of Caledonia and Essex Counties, VT; 1764-1887, compiled & published by Hamilton Child, May 1887, pages 189-201:

Medad, son of Jonathan, married Abigail Hosmer or Hosmore, and reared eleven children, viz.: George, Aaron, Hosea, Medad, Martha, Clark, Darling, Benjamin F., Abigail, Merrill, and one who died in infancy.

He was a member of the Baptist church, and first lived where Alexander G. Welch now resides.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Medad was a young man he worked at Lowell, Massachusetts, walking to that place from Groton in the spring and coming back in the fall, bringing with him a supply of groceries. Spirit of the Age (Woodstock, Vermont), 7 August 1897, page 4.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
His ten known children; surname Welch:

1. George (1815-1865) married Charlotte Welch. They had eight children.
2. Aaron (1818-1893) married first Joannah Plummer. He married second Elizabeth Gibson. He married third, Charlotte Welch, widow of his older brother George. He had eleven children.
3. Hosea, 2d, (1820-1890) married Eliza Plummer. They had nine children.
4. Martha (1822-1843) died at age 21, unmarried.
5. Medad, Jr., (1824-1853) went to California in 1849, where he died.
6. S. G. Clark (1826-1868) married Elizabeth Ann "Lizzie" Richardson. They had two children.
7. Darling (1830-1906) married Arvilla Downing, moved to Minnesota. They had three children.
8. Benjamin Franklin (1833-1897) married Sarah M. Snow, moved to Minnesota. They had one child.
9. Abigail (1835-1840) died at the age of 5 years, unmarried.
10. William Merrill ( 1838-1887). He married first Lidana C. Darling who died young. He married second Irene P. Darling who died young. He married third Jane Endora Adams. He had eleven children.

Medad was survived by his wife; five sons, Aaron, Hosea, Darling, Benjamin F., and William Merrill; and two brothers, Hosea and David.

Medad and his family were enumerated by US Censuses at Groton, Vermont, between 1820 and 1870.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We found [that in Groton, Vermont] there were at least 20 families of Welches and some 12 families of other names who had married Welch women. There were over 125 persons in town who answered to the name of Welch. The postmaster is a Welch, two merchants are Welches, the landlord is Aaron Welch, who married widow George Welch, who was Miss Charlotte Welch before her first marriage. She was twice married, but had not changed her name, or in other words, had been named Welch three times over. There is a blacksmith named Welch, and a host of farmers who bear the same name. We doubt if there is another town in the State which, in proportion to its inhabitants, can count up so many people of the same name.—Union. From the Orleans Independent Standard (Barton, Vermont), Tuesday, 18 January 1870, page 1. Note: The 1870 US Census found that 811 people lived in Groton, so the Welch's represented 15% of its population.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
His Death Certificate gives his date of death as 2 Sept. 1872 at Groton, Vermont, aged 79 years. It lists his occupation as a farmer and the cause of his death as chronic diarrhea.
