He was the brother of Mary K. Mackey, Frank Forrester Mackey, Alice L. Mackey, Mary Charolotte Mackey, and Catherine Georgina (Mackey) Losee.
On August 26, 1908 he married Mamie Stillwell.
James and Mamie had one child: James Gerald Mackey, Sr.
Early on, Jimmy worked at Clapper's General store at Mackey's Corners, NY. Later he became a traveling food salesman. And eventually, was a bank executive in Grand Gorge, NY.

Bank Executive: Mackey dies at 83
Grand Gorge - James G. Mackey, 83, veteran Grand Gorge bank executive, died January 5, at Fox Hospital, where he had been a patient since December 29. Since July 31 he had been a patient at the Oneonta Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, January 8, at the Ouderkirk Funeral Home, Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Douglas Burr, pastor of the Grand Gorge United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will be later in Gilboa Rural Cemetery.
Mr. Mackey was born Aug. 14, 1887 in Mackey's Corners, Town of Gilboa, a son of James A. and Charlotte Jane (Forrester) Mackey. He grew up and attended the country school in the Town of Gilboa.
He married Mamie Stilwell Aug. 26, 1908 at her home in Mackey's Corners. In 1909 they came to Grand Gorge where he lived the rest of his life.
He was employed by Samuel Harley of the Harley Store in Grand Gorge for five years, then he purchased Maynards Hardware Store, which he resold to Mr. Maynard after a year.
For 12 years he was a salesman for Connor's Paint Co., Troy, and from then until his retirement at the age of 65, a salesman for F. B. Mtthews & Co., a wholesale feed and grocery firm.
From 1912 until his retirement he was a member of Grand Gorge Hose Co. No. 1, and from 1920 until his illness, an active member of Oasis Lodge, F&AM, Prattsville.
In 1926 he became a director of the First National Bank of Grand Gorge, and in 1941 was elected Vice President. In 1957 he became director and vice chairman of the Grand Gorge branch of the National Bank and Trust Company of Norwich, and in 1963 was appointed chairman of its advisory board.
He attended the United Methodist Church in Grand Gorge.
He is survived by his wife, Hearthstone, Hobart; a son, James Gerald Mackey Sr., of Windham: two grandsons, James Gerald Mackey Jr., Schenectady, and Roger Blair Mackey, Waldwick, N.J.; and five great grandchildren.
Friends may call at their convenience at the funeral home from Wednesday evening until funeral time.
The family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
