MATTHIAS SPURGEON
CLARKE COUNTY PIONEER
PASSES AWAY
Matthias Spurgeon, one of the earliest pioneers of Clarke County, Washington, passed away Monday evening, March 11, 1918.
Mr. Spurgeon was born in Muscatine County, Iowa, April 22, 1838. His parents, Elias Spurgeon and Jane Likens Spurgeon, died when he was a small boy. In 1852, when but 14 years of age, he crossed the plains with his uncle, George J. Spurgeon, driving a double yoke of oxen the whole distance from Iowa to Washington. Upon arriving here, he went to live with William H. Dillon, with whom he remained until he arrived at the age of majority. In 1863, he purchased a portion of the Petrain Donation Land claim about 2 ½ miles northwest of Vancouver, on Vancouver lake, where he continued to live until a few years ago, when he retired from farming and erected a home in Vancouver, where he spent his declining years.
On October 21, 1877, Mr. Spurgeon married Olive Dillon, with whom he lived happily until his death. Through his industry and frugality, Mr. Spurgeon became one of the most prosperous farmers of Clarke county. He was known far and wide for his charity, no one ever applied in vain to him, for assistance.
He was a consistent member of the Christian church. During his active work as a farmer he was a member of grange No. 82 of Orchards, and took a great interest in the welfare of the organization, serving as master one term and on many important committees.
The following relatives are left to mourn his death: Mrs. Olive Spurgeon, his widow; five children, Mrs. C. W. Nichols, John R., Matthias O. and Gerald Spurgeon of Vancouver, Wash., and Mrs. Harry R. Brooks of Mt. Pleasant, six grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Priscilla Sparks, of Vancouver, Wash., Mrs. Savilla Sparks of Forest Grove, Ore., and Mrs. Louisa Stuart of Manchester, Iowa, besides numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from Knapp's parlors, in Vancouver, Wash., the 13th inst, at 10 o'clock a.m., Elder A. D. Skaggs officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in the city cemetery.
