Bernie was born March 15, 1931, in Strasburg, the daughter of Karl and Katherine (Baumgartner) Keller. She grew up north of Strasburg and attended school at Strasburg. She graduated from Christie's Beauty College at Bismarck in 1949. She married Joseph Materi at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, on Aug. 7, 1950. She worked at various beauty salons in the Strasburg area. She also did hair at the Strasburg Care Center. Bernie had been a resident of the Strasburg Care Center since March of 2005.

She was a member of the Strasburg VFW Auxiliary, serving as past president for nine years. She was also active in church groups. Bernie enjoyed gardening, bowling, crocheting, quilting, shopping, playing cards and listening to the radio. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Marie, Helen, Barbara, Katie, Agatha and Cecilia; and two brothers, Alois and Anthony.
