ITHACA - Leslie Carl Thomas, age 92, of Ithaca (formerly of Elmira), passed away on Monday, March 7, 2005, at the Reconstruction Home in Ithaca. Born in Ithaca on January 5, 1913, Les was the son of Frank and Anna Mae Burns Thomas. At the age of 16, Les hopped from train to train as he headed west where he worked at various ranches for many years. As a cowboy, he mastered trick roping, bull whipping, participating in wild west shows and even played the part of a cowboy in a western movie, "Dodge City". He learned to play several instruments and wrote lyrics to many songs that were made famous by various Country and Western singers in the 1940's. Les was known for his colorful and enthusiastic personality, a natural gift for storytelling and a genuine love of all people who crossed his path. Locally, Les enjoyed the many friendships made in the Ithaca and Elmira areas. Following his cowpoke days, Les was employed by Morse Chain in Ithaca for many years. Les is survived by his companion, Ruth Day of Ithaca; one daughter, Cindy Lou Thomas of Ithaca; two sisters, Helen S. Warren of Cortland and Barbara P. Congdon of Ithaca; and several half-brothers, half-sisters, nieces and nephews. Private Committal Prayers, at the Grove Cemetery in Trumansburg, will be scheduled in the spring.
