WINSTON-SALEM Betty Lindsay Shuford Yount, 95, died July 17, 2013 at Arbor Acres. Mrs. Yount, born in Conover, NC on June 2, 1918, was the daughter of Adrian L. Shuford, Sr., and Annie Warlick Shuford. She graduated from Newton High School and then Duke University where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and where she received her AB in History in 1941. On June 8, 1942, she married Dr. Ernest Harshaw Yount, Jr., of Newton, NC. In 1948 they moved from Chicago to Winston-Salem where he joined the faculty of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine for thirty six years and served as Chairman of Medicine from 1952-1972. Mrs. Yount was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the St. Mary Circle, the Mary Symington Book Club, Old Town Club, and Grandfather Golf and Country Club. She was a member of the Junior League and a past president of the Wake Forest Medical School Guild. Mrs. Yount was an avid golfer. She was an accomplished pianist and violinist and enjoyed the arts, her friends, and her wildflower gardens. She was known for her devotion to Ernie, her husband of 63 years, who preceded her in death on March 15, 2006. Mrs. Yount is survived by her son, Dr. Ernest H. Yount, III, and wife, Dr. Sharon Werntz Yount, of Winston-Salem; her son, Dr. Peter Shuford Yount, and wife, Dr. Avis Brown Yount, of Augusta, GA; and her daughter, Martha Yount Yates, and husband, Eugene Adams Yates, of Lolo, MT; her grandchildren, Jenna Yount and Michaila Yount of Winston-Salem; Dr. Lindsay Yount King, and husband, Gray King, of Boston, MA, and Dr. Kenan Yount of Charlottesville, VA; Hugh Yates of Kalispell, MT, John Yates of Portland, OR, and Dr. Taryn Yates of Weatherford, TX; and great grandchildren, Keegan Yates of Kalispell, MT; and Adelaide King of Boston, MA. She was preceded in death by her brother, Adrian L. Shuford, Jr., of Conover and sister, Mary W. Palmer, of Ann Arbor, MI, and is survived by her sister, Anne McBryde, of Gibson and her brother, Dr. Henry Shuford, of Atlanta, GA. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 3, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and the family will receive friends there afterwards.
