Mary Wharton Shuford Palmer

Palmer, Mary Wharton Shuford Ann Arbor, MI
Age 95, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Huron Woods Assisted Living Facility in Ypsilanti. Mary was born on February 2, 1916 in Conover, NC, the daughter of Adrian Lafayette Shuford, Sr. and Annie Bertha Warlick Shuford. She majored in music theory at the University of Michigan and graduated in 1937. She married William B. Palmer, a professor of economics, on August 28, 1937. They lived together for 52 years until Bill died in 1990 at the age of 93. She and her husband, Bill, built a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (The Palmer House), and Mary lived in the house for 55 years before finally selling it to a young couple from California who shared her vision that the house should be preserved for others.

Mary is survived by her son, Adrian Shuford Palmer and his wife, MaryAnn; three granddaughters, Vivienne Palmer Frye, Louise Adrienne Kozin, and Elizabeth Palmer Ingles; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters in North Carolina, Annie McBryde and Betty Yount, and one brother, in Georgia, Henry Shuford. She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Palmer; her daughter, Mary Palmer Dunn; and her older brother, Adrian Shuford Jr.

The Mary Palmer Endowment Scholarship has been established in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan in her honor. Contributions can be sent to The Development Office, 2005 Baits Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2075.

A memorial celebrating Mary's life will be held at a later date in Ann Arbor in conjunction with the awarding of the first scholarship. A family memorial will be held in North Carolina, at a date to be determined, in summer 2011. Arrangements by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea.
