He was married first to Laura Jane Gifford on January 1, 1865 in Tiverton, Rhode Island.
They had two children:

b. Westport, Mass., d. aged 15 of diphtheria
~~Olive Belle (Gifford) Washburn (1874~1952), who was born in Iowa.
