Son of William and Hannah W. (Gifford) Gifford.


William Herbert Gifford was married to Ella Rose Woodworth on August 29, 1870 in Tiverton, Rhode Island.


For many years William was the proprietor of Gifford's general store on Westport Point and was appointed Postmaster for the area.


William H. Gifford served four years as a Massachusetts State Representative (1909~1912) from the 9th Bristol District. While in office he served on the Fisheries & Game Committee and the Ways and Means Committee.

Was Former Postmaster at Westport Point


(Fall River, July 19) -- William H. Gifford, former representative from the 9th Bristol District, died today at his home at Westport Point. He was 65 years old and one of a family of eight children, of whom two survive.


Mr. Gifford served four terms in the House of Representatives as a Democrat --- 1909, 1910, 1911 and 1912. He served as postmaster at Westport Point for seven years under the Cleveland administration.


Known as "Pop" Gifford, no other representative upon retiring from the house had a better, cleaner or more creditable record.


He was born in Dartmouth. For 30 years he conducted a grocery store at Westport Point. He leaves a sister Isabel Gifford of Dartmouth and a brother John Gifford of Horseneck Beach. The funeral will take place from Westport Point, but the arrangements are incomplete.

William H. Gifford was also survived by his widow, Ella Rose (Woodworth) Gifford; and his two children, Annie A. Bosworth and Charles H. Gifford; as well as several grandchildren.
