Elroy R. Borgwardt, age 72, of 12608 Newton Road, Valders, died Saturday evening, August 22, 1998, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, surrounded by his family.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 27, 1998, at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church, Newton. Rev. Neale R. Riffert will officiate with burial at the church cemetery.
Elroy was born February 2, 1926, in the township of Liberty, Manitowoc County, son of the late Christian and Anna Luebke Borgwardt. He grew up in the Liberty area and attended local schools. On June 1, 1946, he married Lucinda Dill at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church with Rev. K.J. Stuebbe officiating. He farmed all of his life at rural Valders working to develop registered Holsteins at Sunnyside Farms. He was a member of Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church and its Adult Bible Class. He served his church as a deacon, elder and was chairman of the building committee for the new church. He was a director of the St. Nazianz Bank and was presently a member of the advisory board of the First National Bank, St. Nazianz branch. He was past president of the Manitowoc County Holstein Association and the Wisconsin Holstein Association and was a director of the National Holstein Association for ten years. In 1977, he was the first recipient of the Distinguished Breeder Award given by the Wisconsin Holstein Association. He was a lifetime member of the Dairy Shrine Club and received its Distinguished Breeder Award in 1982. He was chairman of the University of Wisconsin college of Agricultural and Life Sciences dairy cattle advisory committee and in 1980 was recognized by the college with its Award of Distinction in appreciation of highly meritorious service to agriculture and rural life. He also received the Badger Dairy Club Guest of Honor Award.
Survivors include his wife, Lucinda; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Peggy Borgwardt, William and Judy Borgwardt, all of rural Valders; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Dr. Randy Argall, Jamestown, N.D; grandchildren, Julie and Wade Graf, Plymouth, Jennifer and Shane Burton, Valders, Scott Borgwardt, Johnson Creek, Wis., and his fiancé, Elizabeth Behringer, Madison, Todd Borgwardt, Valders, Samuel Argall, Iowa City, Iowa, Becky Borgwardt, Phoenix, Ariz., Lisa Borgwardt, Valders; two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Conner Burton, Valders; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Esther Commings, Manitowoc, Ida and Martin Luebke, Valders; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Laurain Borgwardt, Newton, Walter and Doris Borgwardt, St. Nazianz; one sister-in-law, Eunice Wellner, Manitowoc; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wilbert and Shirley Dill, Newton; one step-brother-in-law and step-sister-in-law, Lynn and LaVonne Dill, Mott, N.D.; two step-sisters-in-law, Ruth Smith and Dorothy Goode, Alameda, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Carl; and one brother-in-law, Willard Commings.
Relatives and friends may call at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church, Newton, from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday and on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
