WALTER E. BORGWARDT
(1913 - 2010)

Walter E. Borgwardt, age 97, a resident at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc, formerly of St. Nazianz, entered eternal life early Friday morning, on March 5, 2010, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, where he died from complications of pneumonia.

Walter was born on Feb. 19, 1913, in the town of Liberty, Manitowoc County. He was the son of the late Chris and Anna Luebke Borgwardt. Walter farmed in the town of Liberty his entire lifetime. On Nov. 22, 1951, he married Doris Schmidt at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Manitowoc, with the Rev. Theophil Uetzmann officiating for their wedding. In past years Walter had been a member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in the town of Liberty, where he had served on the church council. Walter was a present member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church. He was a lifetime member of the National Holstein Association, American Dairy Shrine and the Future Farmers of American Alumni of Valders. Water was a cancer survivor of over 28 years. He had been very active and well known for helping young farmers getting started with registered Holstein cattle.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years: Doris; one son and daughter-in-law: Eugene and Marlene Borgwardt, Valders; two granddaughters: Amber (Nathan) Reinertson, St. Nazianz; Maria Borgwardt, Milwaukee, Wis.; two stepgrandchildren: Dallas Skarda, Valders; Jimmy (Jill) Skarda, Valders; one brother and sister-in-law: Harold and Lauraine Borgwardt, Osman, Wis.; one sister: Esther Commings, Manitowoc; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers: John, Carl and Elroy Borgwardt; and one sister: Ida Luebke.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, March 8, 2010, at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, 916 Pine St., Manitowoc. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul Schossow and Rev. Nicholas Maglietto. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

Relatives and friends may call at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m.

Memorials would be appreciated to Manitowoc Lutheran High School, Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.

Walters's commitment was to his faith, family and farming.

The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory, N. 11th and St. Clair streets, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
