Calvin Leander Butler, 74, one of the old residents of the town, died at his home on Main street Wednesday after an illness of four years from brain trouble. The end came peacefully and without a struggle. Mr. Butler was a native of Buckland. He came to Greenfield when a young man. He learned the machinist trade and became an expert workman at the John Russell cutlery. For many years he was superintendent of that large establishment. Mr. Butler was an accomplished musician and was organist at the First Baptist church for many years.

He married April 13, 1859, Miss Caroline Fisk, daughter of the late Dr. C. L. Fisk. They have two children, Benjamin and Mrs. Franklin Allen. Mr. Butler was very prominent in Masonic circles, being a member of Republican Lodge, Franklin Royal Arch Chapter, Titus Strong Council, and Connecticut Valley Commandery Knights Templar. He was organist for the Masonic bodies for many years. Mr. Butler was a quiet unassuming man, but one who did much good in an unostentatious manner. He often sacrificed his own time and pleasure to help others and was always on the watch to do a friendly act. The funeral was held at his home late yesterday afternoon. The burial was in Green River cemetery. Eminent Sirs E. G. Best, M. S. Fellows, and C. J. Fiske officiated at the grave. The Greenfield band accompanied the escort of Sir Knights to and from the cemetery.
