Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Wednesday, September 15, 1920, page 1:
Joseph Zika, veteran of the Spanish-American war, died this morning at 5 o'clock from tuberculosis, with which he has been ailing for nearly three years and which developed after a severe attack of influenza during the first epidemic that swept the country. During the long illness he made a hard fight in an effort to recover and did not give up until the last hour.
Yesterday and last night he was up and about with no indications that the end was so near. Within the last few days he has been able to be down town, although his weakness was readily seen by friends and acquaintances.
There was a sinking spell about an hour before the end during which he failed rapidly.
Mr. Zika was among the first of Edwardsville to have influenza and his case was a serious one. He failed to recover from the effects of the flu and remained under the care of a physician. After several months there were symptoms of lung troubles and he gave up an indoor position to be in the open air as much as possible.
Plans for the funeral are being completed this afternoon. Services are to be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence on Orchard street under auspices of Edwardsville Lodge No. 46, I.O.O.F.  Burial will be at Woodlawn.
Mr. Zika was born at Glen Carbon and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Zika of Hamel township. He was 42 years old on March 26, last. He attended the school at Glen Carbon and as a boy of 16 years moved to Hamel township with the family.
As a young man he entered the army and spent six years in the service. He participated in the Spanish-American war and did service in Cuba.
Several years ago he was married to Miss Tillie Vieth of Carpenter. The widow and one daughter, Florence survive. Another child died in infancy. Five brothers, John, Mike, William, Charles and Frank Zika and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Palek and Mrs. Joseph Bemasch survive.
For a number of years Mr. Zika was connected with the local furniture establishments, more lately with E.A. Keller Company. He was of a musical trend, a hard worker.
