JANESVILLE - Walter Elwyn Bancroft, Sr., age 72, of 824 S. Fremont St., died Tues., July 25, 1989, at Edgerton Hospital. He was born Dec. 16, 1916, the son of George and Estella (Yale) Bancroft. He married Margaret Ann Moore May 16, 1945. Walter, Sr. retired in 1981 from the Purchasing Dept. at the Parker Pen Co. after 36 years. He served with the 32nd Red Arrow Infantry Division during World War II in the South Pacific. He received his Officers Commission in the O. C. S. in Australia. He received the Purple Heart for wounds to his chest and right lung. He was presented the Silver Star Award for going beyond the call of duty saving many lives. He was a member of VFW Post #1621 and the First Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; 1 son, Walter E. (Marilee) Bancroft, II, of Janesville; 2 grandchildren, Michelle and Jared Bancroft of Janesville; 4 sisters: Leone Miller of Cary, NC, Delores Hoff of Wappingers Falls, NY, Betty Cullen and Barbara Barthel both of Janesville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. One son, Bradley, and 1 brother, Robert, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Fri. at Overton Funeral Home. Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park.
