Found in The State 21 June 1988: Francis William LaMotte, 84, of 815 Woodland Drive, died Sunday. Born in Richland County, he received a B. A. degree at Presbyterian College in 1924, where he played football and baseball and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He received his civil engineering degree, magna cum laude, at the University of South Carolina in 1927. He attended Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga., and Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He worked as an engineer with the South Carolina Highway Department until 1933, when he started his own business as a construction engineer and general contractor. He entered the Infantry Reserve in 1925 and the South Carolina National Guard in 1927. He was mobilized into federal service in 1940 as captain in Headquarters Company, 118th Infantry. He was promoted to major in 1942 and to lieutenant colonel in 1943. He went overseas with the 88th Division in 1943 as assistant chief of staff, G-1, and entered combat in Italy. He was awarded a number medals, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Order of British Empire and the Croix de Guerre. He was with the 88th Division from its activation in Oklahoma through the war. He was promoted to colonel in 1945 and separated from service in 1946. He returned to his business as engineer and general contractor in 1946 and continued until his retirement in 1968. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Forest Lake Club, a founding member of the Palmetto Club, a lifetime member of the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina, a member of the Carolinas Branch of the Association of General Contractors, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Lions Club. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Hagood LaMotte, sons, John M. Cantey and F. Willliam LaMotte Jr., both of Columbia; a daughter, Mrs. Frank E. Robinson II of Columbia; brothers, Dr. Louis C. LaMotte of Maxton, N. C., and E. Golladay LaMotte of Hopkinsville, Ky. Services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Elmwood Cemetery.

He can be found on the 1910 US Census for Ward 2, Columbia, Richland, SC at age 6, living with parents A. Gamewell, 41, and Francis G., 41 and siblings, A. Gamewell, 10, Louis C., 8, Thomas J., 4, and E. Golladay, 2, as well as grandfather, Thomas J., 80, aunt Mamie A., 52, and his father's aunt, Elma Agnes Beard, 67, and servant Mattie Brunson. He was born in SC, his father in SC and his mother in Tennessee.

He returned to his business as engineer and general contractor in 1946 and continued until his retirement in 1968. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Forest Lake Club, a founding member of the Palmetto Club, a lifetime member of the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina, a member of the Carolinas Branch of the Association of General Contractors, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Lions Club.
