ELIZABETH (BETTY) LOUISE PEERY DAYNES was born September 14, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Joseph Stras Peery and Julina Clarissa Smith Peery, their fourth of six children. She is a granddaugter of President Joseph F. Smith, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The family made their home at 1435 Yale Avenue in Salt Lake City. She attended public schools, including Douglas Elementary, Uintah Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High and East High. After graduation from East, she attended the University of Utah where she became a member of Chi Omega sorority. She also attended Utah State University.
On January 9, 1938, at the Yale Ward Chapel, 450 people attended the farewell for Betty, 21, who was leaving to serve in the Eastern States Mission, based in New York City. She served 19 months, assigned to cities or towns in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She was honorably released in July 1939, when she returned home to Salt Lake City.
On January 1, 1942 she married Lincoln Anson Daynes, who also was from Salt Lake City. They built their first home in Salt Lake, but in 1957 they moved further south to Cottonwood. There they built a lovely family home on Shangri Lane where they raised their five children. Betty and Lincoln took their children on camping and boating trips, skiing, and on other vacations. They eventually built a family cabin on the shores of Bear Lake, Utah, which had been their favorite family place for summers. It still remains a treasured place for family.
When Lincoln died in 1970, at 53, Betty took over running Daynes Optical Co. and Utah Optical Co., successful family businesses that Lincoln had built. She later sold Daynes Optical but continued to run Utah Optical for many years.
In 1993, Betty was diagnosed with lung cancer. She died, at age 76, on December 10, 1993 in South Jordan, Utah, at the home of her daughter, Laurie Jane. She was loved and adored by all of her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her.
She was buried in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Salt Lake City, next to her late husband, Lincoln.
