Obituary - Dr. Joseph Smith Peery 1911 ~ 2006 After a full and adventurous life Dr. Joseph Smith Peery passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday August 19, 2006.

Dr. Peery graduated with honors from the University of Utah and went on to receive his Ph.D. at Northwestern University. He returned to the University of Utah and became Dean of the College of Business from 1974 to 1976.

Joe will be remembered as a wonderful professor, a sharp businessman, a courageous man, and a loving father, brother, patriarch and friend.

His rich life began February 6, 1911, in Salt Lake City; son of Joseph Stras Peery and Julina Smith.

Never afraid of hard-work or forging a new path, Joe founded his own store, Seagull Drug, in Sugarhouse at only 26, helped to establish an MBA program with the United States Air Force in Europe, authored the Tracy Trend letter, did editorials for KSL known as the "What's Right with America" series, and was one of the first men to run the middle fork of the Salmon River.

His true passion, however, was teaching. For his work as a professor of finance and economics at the University of Utah he earned many distinguished awards, including the Brady Superior Teaching Award in 1992.

Joseph was a proud and loving man who will always be remembered and loved.

He married Phyllis Evans (divorced). He later married Fern Flagler (divorced).

His children: J. Craig Peery (Leslie), Tana Peery Hunter (Douglas), Teri Peery (Chris Himmel). Joseph has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to join in a memorial and "Celebration of His Life" from 4-6 p.m. August 26th, 2006 at the University Park Hotel.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to the Nature Conservancy or the University of Utah.
