Walter was the third of four children of Thomas Walter Yarborough (1887-1953) and Edna Florence Segrue (1897-1982) and their first son. His name was "T Walter" (the T did not stand for a name, though he inscribed himself as Thomas Walter on his WWII draft registration card) and he was called Walter throughout his life. He was born and raised in McComb, MS, and lived his adult life in Baton Rouge, LA.

Walter enlisted on Sept, 2, 1942, for service as a Seaman First Class in the Coast Guard and was first stationed at New Orleans, LA. Later, Walter attended Officer Training School in New London, CT, and became a First Class Quartermaster and served in the U.S. Navy in the Southwest Pacific during the war.

On Nov,.20, 1947, a week before Thanksgiving (in the first year that holiday was declared by the U.S. President), Walter married his lifelong love, Angeline Mae (Angie) Manda (1927-2015). They wed at the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. H. J. Accardo; Angie's sister Barbara was maid of honor and Walter's brother Ted was best man. The couple had five children between 1949 and 1961, one daughter and four sons: Thomas Walter (Tommy), Robert Vincent (Bobby), Mary Elaine, Stephen Jay, and Matthew W.

Angie's parents had established Manda Meats in Baton Rouge, and Walter was the plant manager until his retirement.
