Walter enlisted on Sept, 2, 1942, for service as a Seaman First Class in the Coast Guard and was first stationed at New Orleans, LA. Later, Walter attended Officer Training School in New London, CT, and became a First Class Quartermaster and served in the U.S. Navy in the Southwest Pacific during the war.
On Nov,.20, 1947, a week before Thanksgiving (in the first year that holiday was declared by the U.S. President), Walter married his lifelong love, Angeline Mae (Angie) Manda (1927-2015). They wed at the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. H. J. Accardo; Angie's sister Barbara was maid of honor and Walter's brother Ted was best man. The couple had five children between 1949 and 1961, one daughter and four sons: Thomas Walter (Tommy), Robert Vincent (Bobby), Mary Elaine, Stephen Jay, and Matthew W.
Angie's parents had established Manda Meats in Baton Rouge, and Walter was the plant manager until his retirement.

Died Sunday, July 17, 1994, at 11:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 77, a native of McComb, Miss., and longtime resident of Baton Rouge. He was a retired Manda Packing Company plant manager and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Visiting at funeral home 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, celebrated by Father Maynard E. Hurst and Father Eugene R. Engels. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by wife of 46 years, Angie Manda Yarborough; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Elaine Yarborough and Maxwell J. Bordelon Jr., Marksville; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Tommy and Tracey B. Yarborough and Bobby and Marsha B. Yarborough, all of Baton Rouge, Steve and Jeanne P. Yarborough, Springfield, and MattYarborough, Baton Rouge; two sisters, Julia Y. Banner and Ann Yarborough, both of Houston; a brother, Ted Yarborough, Houston; five granddaughters, Katie, Amanda, Melissa, Michelle and Morgan Yarborough; and four grandsons, Chad, Josh, Jay and Patrick Yarborough. Preceded in death by parents, Edna Segrue Yarborough and Thomas Walter Yarborough. Pallbearers will be Chad, Josh, Jay, Patrick and Ted Yarborough, Dr. Larry Kleinpeter and Maurice W. O'Rourk III. Honorary pallbearers are John A. Manda Jr., Tim Labat, I.D. Contine, James Langlois and Vincent Serio. He was a member of St. Louis King of France Catholic Church and Disabled American Veterans.
