Nick attended a German-speaking Catholic school as a child. He had numerous jobs during his life, moving his family along with him from place to place, in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, California, and Missouri. He owned and operated Luken Tire and Supply in Norfolk, Nebraska and worked as a salesman for US Rubber Co. in Kansas City, Missouri. He retired to Phoenix in 1961. He was an important father figure to his grandchildren Kevin, Nicholas, and Gregg when their father - Charles Horstman died in an airplane accident.
