Mary Liebl was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Liebl of Wabasha, Wisconsin (until 1868) and later of Ponca, Nebraska, and Sioux City, Iowa. In 1873, the family moved to Lincoln township, Plymouth County, where they took up farming. She married John Luken at the St. Joseph's Catholic church in Le Mars Rev. Father Mies officiating at the marriage. John and Mary were considered to be early pioneers and builders of Plymouth County. Mary had two step-sisters - Mrs. Emma Schultz of Emery, SD, and Mrs. George Kaun of Sioux Falls, SD, and a step-brother Albert Liebl of Emery, SD. Mary Liebl Luken was buried at the St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery in Le Mars.

Note: According to her obituary, she was born in Wabasha, Wisconsin. Wabasha is in Minnesota, not Wisconsin. Based on Census records, she was likely born near Farmington, Washington Co., Wisconsin.
