It is our sad duty to inform you all of the passing of a Shipmate. Eugene Edward Parkos, 70, of 230 Connecticut Blvd., Oakdale, CT died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was born March 3, 1944, in Algoma, Wis., the son of Joseph and Myrtle (Amans) Parkos. He graduated from Algoma High School in 1962 and received an associate's degree from Florida Junior College in 1975. Eugene married Charlene D. (Flynn) Parkos in Groton, at Shepherd of the Sea Chapel on Nov. 18, 1972.
Eugene served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 through 1983. He qualified in submarines on the USS Ulysses S Grant (SSBN-631) in 1965. A veteran of Vietnam, Lebanon Peace Keeping Mission, and the Invasion of Grenada, he retired from the Navy in 1983 as a STSCS(SS). Following his military career, Eugene retired from URS Corp. in Groton in 2010.
Eugene joined us at USSVI Groton Base in 1999, he was a Life member. He was also a member of the Groton Lodge of Elks 2163 where he had served as a past treasurer, a trustee and a member of the dock committee. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, golf, clamming and catching lobsters.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; one daughter, two brothers, 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
