LITTLE YORK - Murl D. Melton, 88, Little York, died at 5:12 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 19, 2004) in Community Medical Center, Monmouth.

He was born Sept. 30, 1916, in Harrison County, Ind., the son of Ora and Minnie Bryant Melton.

He married Mabel Logsdon on March 28, 1936, in Galesburg. She died April 9, 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Susie (and Tom) Polek, Groveland, Calif., and Ann (and Bill) Johnson, Little York; two sons, Jim (and Samantha) Melton, Fort Myers, Fla., and Tom (and Carole) Melton, Shabbona; four sisters, Lelia Olson, Mary (and Deen) Lincoln and Sarah (and Edward) Burns, all of Monmouth, and Dorothy Miller, Cedar Vale, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

He came to Illinois with his parents at the age of 6 months. He attended Duck Creek Grade School and graduated from Aledo High School in 1933. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Civil Conservation Corps and worked in the Congerville area.

He was a farmer for most of his working years. He retired from farming in 1983 and he and his wife spent the winter months in their home in Lakeland, Fla. He became a state pro shuffleboard player in Florida.

He served on the Warren County Farm Bureau Board, Warren County Extension Council, Warren County Soil Conservation Board, Warren County FS Board, and was a member of Little John Conservation Club of Victoria.

He was of Catholic faith.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, with the Rev. David Dutton officiating. Friends may call Friday at the funeral home; family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Community Medical Center, Monmouth, and the American Heart Association.

Among his many survivors are a son, Tom (Carole) Melton of Shabbona; a granddaughter, Cynthia (Wayne) Fleetwood and family of Malta; and a grandson, Tod (Diane) Melton and family of Rock Falls. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel in Monmouth. Friends may call on Friday at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, where his family will be present from 6:30-8 p.m. Memorials have been established for Community Medical Center in Monmouth and the American Heart Association.
