Alfred Alexander Hayes, known as Alexander or Alex, was born in North Carolina, the son of Stephen and Rebecca Puryear Hayes. He was a farmer/stockman who had lived in Giles County, Tennessee, and who came to Texas with his family sometime before 1894. He was married to Louiza (Lou) Thurman in Tennessee and they were the parents of known children; Elbert Mitchel, Eula L., Mary Ida, Stephen, Myrtle Gertrude, Clyde O., and Ollie Eleanor Hayes.
Alexander Hayes died on January 9, 1920, and was laid to rest in San Saba City Cemetery.
