Robert A. McPhaill was the son of John McPhaill and Margaret Gilchrist. His father was from Scotland and his mother from North Carolina. He married Deborah Fowler, daughter of America Fowler and Mary Mitchell, in 1819 in Alabama and lived in Alabama, and Arkansas until about 1850 when they moved to Texas.
Robert and Deborah were the parents of 8 known children: Archibald, Elizabeth, William, Mary, Eliza, John, Flora and George Daniel.
Their youngest son, George Daniel, married Dianah Long, daughter of John S. Long and Leah Smelcer. Dianah is also buried in Blanton Cemetery.
