John was the son of Robert A. McPhaill and Deborah Fowler. The McPhaill family moved from Arkansas to Texas sometime around 1850, settling in Fannin County. John married (1) Emily Irving, mother of his daughter, Emma Catherine McPhaill who was born in 1859. His first wife may have died in childbirth. Emma survived and after her father's death was raised by her grandparents and her uncle, George Daniel McPhaill and his first wife, Diannah Long.
Shortly before his death, John married (2) Almira "America" Jane Cox, daughter of John Cox and Mary Ann Kifer.
There is no stone for John, but it is thought that he is buried in Blanton near his parents.
