In 1959, Arden began working as a meat cutter and sausage maker. He came to Howard Lake to work at Custer's Super Valu in 1962, and worked there full-time until 1988 when the store was sold to Gerry Smith.

After working for Gerry's, he went to Marv's Red Owl in Annandale, and then to The Marketplace in Cokato, where he worked part-time until 1996.

He enjoyed fishing, boating, minigolf, yard work, visiting with people, his grandchildren, and watching his grandson race cars.
