William David Wesley "West" Hampton was born in 1888 in Rector, Clay County, Arkansas. He was the third out of nine children and oldest son of William N. "Buck" and Dora Belle Hamilton Hampton. West and several of his siblings attended the Eastep School.

On December 13, 1908, West married Letha Ann "Annie" Dortch. They had six children: Nora Willie Hampton Fultz, Enos Louis Hampton, Enos's twin sister who died at birth, Dora "Irene" Hampton Phillips, Marie Hampton Huckabay, and Willodene Hampton Terry. The children went to the Tokio School just outside of Rector. Wes and Annie were known as Mommy and Papa to their children, and Ma and Pa Hampton to everyone else.

Ma Hampton died in 1965, and Pa died in 1973, both in Paragould.
