Efforts Made To Revive Child Last Night Prove Fruitless
Little Leroy Lehman, two year and three month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lehman, town of Two Rivers, died at the Two Rivers municipal hospital at 8:20 last night, five hours after he had eaten from a can containing rat poison.
The child was found by his mother in the kitchen of the Lehman farm home when she smelled the sulphur ingredient of the poison and rushed from a bedroom to investigate. She found her small son eating from the can, with his face and hair smeared with the poison paste. The child, in some manner, had taken the can from a shelf over the basement stairway and pried off the lid.
Rushed to Doctor -- "I don't know how the boy reached for the can on the stairway" said the father this morning. "It seemed to be out of reach, and only a week ago I placed the lid on the can very securely. It was a hard job then to pry the cover from the can."
The youngster, after taking the can from the stairway, brought it into the kitchen, took a knife from a box in the kitchen and pried the cover open, according to the mother.
Shortly before 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon an elder brother, (Private), rushed the boy to the office of Dr. A.P. Zlatnik for treatment. He apparently was in no great pain at the time but he acted rather queerly, the brother declared.
After emergency treatment was administered the physician rushed the youngster to the hospital, where he died several hours later, all attempts at reviving the infant proving fruitless.
Funeral Friday --Little Leroy was born in Manitowoc on July 16, 1933, the parents having moved from Bear Creek, Outagamie county, several years ago. Nearly two years ago the family came to the town of Two Rivers where the father operated an 80-acre farm, two miles north of the city on Highway 42.
Besides his parents the deceased leaves six sisters; and four brothers (private). Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Friday morning from St. Luke's Catholic church, with the Very Rev. Dean C.V. Hugo officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery.
The remains are at the Beduhn & Goetz funeral home from where the body will be removed to the church.
