Dorothy (Bruning) Backhurst, age 98, of Pemberville, OH passed away on Monday, July 28, 2014 at Otterbein Portage Valley, Pemberville, OH. She was born on May 23, 1916 to Ellsworth and Martha (Palmer) Armstrong in Toledo, OH. She married Wayne Bruning in 1937 and moved to Lake Twp. in Wood County. For 35 years she wintered at the County Club Estates, Venice, FL where she met and married Roland Backhurst in 1980. She was an active participant in the activities and politics of the park and in the Venice area where she was a member of the First Church of Christian Scientist and The Mother Church in Boston, MA. She attended Navarre Elementary School, Waite High School and Toledo University. For many years she was a Junior and Senior Girl Scout Leader and past President of Lake School PTA. Her memberships included: Christian Science Church, Maumee, OH, Dendarah Ct, Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Stars (1963) of the Woodbine Chapter of Pemberville and Deputy Grand Matron (1969) of the 6th District of the State of Ohio. In 1965 she and her husband Wayne traveled to Naples, Italy where they participated in the Institution (1965) and Constitution (1967) of the Mediterranean Chapter. Dorothy loved to travel and visited over 25 countries and all 50 states in the USA. In her spare time she enjoyed painting, art work, crafts, sewing, playing Bridge and fishing. Dorothy is survived by her daughter: Carol Stout and son: Mike (Norma) Bruning both of Perrysburg, OH, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands: Wayne Bruning in 1974 and Roland Backhurst in 2008, daughter: Connie Haas, son-in-law: Richard Stout, brother: William Armstrong and sister: Janette Hankinson. Family and friends will be received on Friday, August 1, 2014 from 5-8 PM from the Marsh Funeral Home, 110 Main Street, Luckey, OH where funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11 AM. Interment will be in Lake Twp. Cemetery, Walbridge, OH. Consideration for memorial contributions are to: Otterbein Portage Valley or Christian Science Church, Maumee, OH.
