Jacob Pierce, 91, Funeral services Held Here Sunday

There was another vacant space in the rapidly thinning ranks of G.A.R. veterans when Jacob Pierce, 91, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.B. Beeler, near Hillsboro, May 7. Funeral services were conducted at White's Funeral parlor here Sunday with the Rev. J.H. McDonald in charge. The old soldier was laid to rest in the Scappoose cemetery. He had been to the home of his daughter to celebrate his birthday, April 28, and apparently was in good health. At the birthday party, surrounded by children and grandchlidren, he played games and even danced a jig to show how young he was. A few days later he had an attack of acute indigestion which caused his death.
Jacob Pierce was born in Wells Springs Tenn., April 28, 1845, and was the youngest of a large family. At the age of 17 he enlisted in a Tennessee regiment in answer to President Lincoln's call for volunteers, his father and seven brothers already having joined the army. After a few months of service, he was sent home by his captain when it was learned that a raiding party had taken all stock and provisions from the Pierce home leaving the mother and grandmother almost helpless. He remained at home for almost a year, got the farm going again and rejoined his company and took part in several important engagements before peace was declaired.
He married shorly after the war was over and with his wife, moved to Liberty, Nebr. where he made his home until 1925, moving then to St Hellens (after the death of his wife) to make his home with Recorder and Mrs. J.E. Beeler. He was very active for a man of his years and was often seen downtown where he enjoyed the company of children of whom he was very fond.
Surviving are three sons, William R. Pierce and George T. Pierce of Warren, and James of Liberty, Nebr., and three daughters, Mrs. J.B. Beeler, Hillsboro, Mrs. J.E. Beeler, St. Hellens, and Mrs. Ada Retchless, Liberty, Nebr.
Many friends of the deceased and the bereaved family attended the funeral and accompanied the body to the Scappoose cemetery for the final rites.
