Calgary Herald – November 2 1984

AVIS – Miss M. Esther I. Avis, beloved sister of Gordon Avis, 830 18 Avenue S.W., passed away at the Holy Cross Hospital on November 1, 1984, at the age of 87 years. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Mrs. Frances Avis, Calgary; two nephews, Donald Avis, Calgary and Walter Avis, Lafayette, Indiana, U.S.A.; a niece Audrey Avis, Calgary and by two grand nephews, Andrew and Michael Avis, Lafayette, Indiana, U.S.A. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Annie Avis, six brothers, John, George, Frank, Walter, Alfred and Harold Avis and by two sisters, Caroline Hall and Ethel Avis. She was born at Cockburn Island, Manitoulin District, Ontario and in 1911 came west to Calgary. She completed her high school education and then graduated from the Calgary Normal School and taught school at Calgary for many years until her retirement. Funeral Services will be held at Leyden’s Funeral Chapel (323A 17 Avenue S.W.) Monday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Donald G. Littlejohns officiating. Parking at Leyden’s Funeral Home Parking Lot (17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.). Interment will follow in the family plot at Burnsland Cemetery.
