Mrs. Birdie Newton, 72, of Stafford, died in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, on Saturday evening after a long illness.

She is survived by her husband, W. T. Newton; six sons, French and Jesse Newton, of Caroline County, and William H., Alvin, Patrick D. Newton, and Horace Newton, all of Stafford; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Fines, of Stafford and Mrs. Ruby Eubank, of Caroline; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Rose, Mrs. Lily Bourne, and Mrs. Catherine Jett, all of Stafford; 41 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are to be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery. The body rest at Wheeler and Thompson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Henry Bourne, David Shackelford, Henry Rose, Leonard Fines, William Wilson and E. D. Woodard.
