Enlisted, 1899, in Troop 3, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. He saw field service with Troop 3, Squadron A, during the Croton Dam Strike, April of 1900.

HOR, 1900, 41 East 29th Street, NY, NY

When Squadron A was being federalized for service on the Mexican border, the State of New York authorized the formation of Depot Squadron A. A call for volunteer from the veterans of Squadron A went out. He enlisted at the muster of Depot Squadron A, on March 14, 1916, serving in Troop B. He served in Troop B till discharged in 1917.

His two son both served in the 101st Cavalry Regiment ( Squadron A ). Edward Rush Duer Jr. 1934 - 1938 and Pennington Duer 1935 - 1940. His brother in laws, served in Squadron A, Ooyhout Z. Whitehead 1895 - 1898 and William Silas Whitehead, 1895 - 1898 and mustered in for service with Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish American War.
