William was the son of Martin and Agafiia (Chebetnoi) Gilbert, his father was from Norway and his mother was Alaskan. After his mother died, William was adopted by Bostrop and Nadesda Ommundsen, his adoptive father was from Norway where he was a seaman and in Alaska he was a fox breeder and a commerical fisherman; his adoptive mother was Alaskan, they lived in Unga Village, Unga Island, Shumagin Islands, Alaska. William was a trapper and a commerical fisherman. William married Esther (Cushing) Pearson in Unga Village, they made it their home for many years raising a blended family of Pearson daughters, Genevieve, Clara, and Frances; Gilbert children, Reynold, Dorothy, Esther, Ada, Robert, William, Thomas, Marvin and Jerry. The Gilbert family moved to Squaw Harbor, Unga Island, after the Pearson daughters married. They spend a number of years in Squaw Harbor raising their children. In later years William and his wife and son Robert moved to Sand Point, Popof Island, Alaska, they lived in a house on the waterfront in an area called "Little Sanak.

William is interred beside his wife in the Squaw Harbor "Down the Point" Cemetery.
