Reynold was the son of William and Esther (Cushing, Pearson) Gilbert. He was raised in Unga Village, Unga Island, Shumagin Islands, Alaska. As a young adult he moved to Squaw Harbor "Down the Point" Gilbert homestead, Unga Island, with his family. Reynold was a fisherman and a crew member of the MV Aleutian Mail working as a deckhand.
Reynold was preceded in death by his sisters Esther and Dorothy. He was survived by his parents; sisters Genevieve Melseth, Clara Gilbert and Frances Larsen. His Gilbert siblings, Esther, Ada, Robert, William, Thomas, Marvin and Jerry.
Reynold is interred in the Squaw Harbor "Down the Point" Cemetery.
