Marvin John was the son of William and Esther (Cushing) (Pearson) Gilbert. He was raised in Unga and Squaw Harbor villages on Unga Island, Shumagin Islands, Alaska. Later he made Sand Point, Popof Island, Alaska his permanent home.

Marvin was a commercial fisherman in the Shumagin Islands and on Mainland Alaska. He crewed on the family FV Easter and later owned and operated his own FV Esther G. Marvin was drafted into the US Army, he was stationed at Ft. Richardson, Alaska, receiving an honorable discharge.

He married Theckla (Dushkin) Nielson. He and his wife loved to play Bingo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Reynold, Jerry, Thomas, and Robert; his sisters, Esther II, Dorothy, and Esther III.

Marvin is interred at the Sand Point City Cemetery.
