Margaret Gaston, was born in the bounds of Cloughwater, County Antrim, Ireland on the 29th of August 1739. Margaret was the eldest of twelve children of John and Esther (née Waugh) Gaston. The Gaston family were descendants of French Protestants inspired by the writings of John Calvin in the 1530s and emigrated to Scotland and then Ireland to escape persecution for their faith.

Around 1749, Margaret's family emigrated to America and first settled in Pennsylvania... later moving to the back country of South Carolina near present day, Chester. Here Margaret's father was appointed Justice of the Peace by Crown and Colonial Governor.

In 1759, Margaret Gaston married James McCreary; with whom she had three known children:
John (1761-1833)
Samuel (1763-1834)
Margaret (1765-1834)

Per a letter her father wrote to her aunt, Margaret Gaston McCreary departed this life in late October 1766 at the age of 28 years. She was laid to rest next to her paternal uncle, Rev. Hugh Gaston in the old Richardson Presbyterian Church cemetery, also known as Lower Fishing Creek and Burnt Meeting House Church cemetery.
