Broke His Neck.
Thomas Costello of Spruce Hill, last Sunday evening fell from his wagon and broke his neck. Mr. Costello had just returned from Scriven where he had been with his sons, Steven and John. They had been there all day. It was a little after six o’clock and the sons were unhitching the horses when the old gentleman in climbing down from the wagon, missed his footing and pitched forward falling on his head. The young men ran to him and found him insensible. They raised him up and carried him to the house placing him on the bed, thinking he was but stunned. He lived but a few minutes.
Mr. Costello was a native of Ireland and was about 73 years old. He lived several years in London where he was a police officer and where he was married and his eldest son John was born, just before he started for this country, 47 years ago. He came to Minneapolis in 1856 and to Douglas county 25 years ago. He was a veteran of the war having been a member of Co. H, First Minnesota heavy artillery. His wife died six months ago and there are living 8 children: John and Steven who are at home, David, who lives near Browns Valley, Thomas of Grand Forks, Mrs. Bushlar of Chicago; Mrs. Geo. Matson of Long Prairie, Mrs. Gilbert Scriven of Scriven, and Mrs. Geo. Carlton of Osakis. The funeral was on Tuesday.
