A pioneer of Spruce Hill township died at Rochester March 3, when Mrs. Julia Stevens passed away there at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eudora Kappier, at the age of 82 years.
Julia Cecilia Costello was born in Franklin, Mass., on June 6, 1854. She came to Minneapolis with her parents when a child and grew to womanhood there. She was married in Minneapolis to Gilbert F. Scriven on May 25, 1872 and they came to Douglas county that fall and took up a homestead in Spruce Hill township. They farmed there until in 1904 when they moved to Alexandria and Mr. Scriven took a position as rural mail carrier. Five children survived their father and mother: Burt, of Spokane; Mamie Peck, who lives at Corland, New York; Sadie Peet of Staples; Frank, who lives at Weirdale, Saskatchewan, and Eudora Kappler of Rochester. Mr. Scriven died November 28, 1919.
On December 6, 1922, Mrs. Scriven was married to Franklin J. Stevens. They made their home in Alexandria until his death on June 6, 1932. The next year she went to Rochester, Minn., where she made her home with her daughter. She had been confined to her bed most of the time she lived in Rochester.
Mrs. Stevens is survived by two brothers, Steve Costello of Garfield and Dave Costello of Black Duck and two sisters: Mrs. Mary Bressler of Taveres, Florida, and Mrs. Ellen Carlton of Los Angeles. A sister, Mrs. Nora Mathison of Taveres, Florida, died last July.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Anderson Funeral Home; Rev. H. F. Midkiff officiating. Burial was made in Kinkead cemetery.
