Ulysis Sherman America Ledgerwood was a daughter of Sarah Jane (Burkhart) (1857-1918) and David Brownlee Andrew Ledgerwood (1855-1928) of Maynardville, Union County, Tennessee. She was born following the War Between the States on Dec 4, 1876 into a loving family that eventually totaled eight children, many with unusual names. Ulysis apparently went by the name Sherman during much of her life as many documents are under that name, mostly the censuses. Jacob L McCloud was a child of the McCloud family of LaFollette in Campbell County, Tennessee. He was 8 years Ulysis's senior and a mechanic by trade. The couple married on Dec 10, 1897 in Knox County, and set up a home in Union County, Tennessee, in the Maynardville area. They had a daughter they named Truly on Oct 6, 1898, followed by a son, Earl L., in May of 1900. By 1910, the family had grown in size to two daughters and four sons. Their second daughter, Mavia A., was b.1903. Their three younger sons were born as follows: Paul Alvin, b.Sept.16, 1904, James Brownlow, b.Sept 17, 1906, and Ralph P., b.May, 1908. By 1920, the family had moved to Campbell County. Jacob was now in the lumber business and one more son had been added to their family, John Ty, b.March 6, 1912. Truly was no longer in the home, having married; neither was Ralph. On Feb 3rd, 1925 their son, Earl, who had moved to the town of Neon, Letcher County, Kentucky, died from Typhoid, and his remains were returned to Tennessee. He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in La Follette, Campbell County, where the family now lived and Woodlawn became the cemetery for most of the family as they passed from this life to the next. By 1930, all of the children but James had moved away from home, starting lives of their own. Ulysis died at the age of 58 yrs. from heart problems. She was buried next to her son, Earl, who had died 10 years previously. Her husband joined her in 1947, at the age of 88, having lived quite a long life. Sons, Paul Alvin passed away in 1979 and James Brownlow passed in 1989. John Ty died in 1998 and is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville, Knox County. Mavia had married Lewis I. Mauney, who had been in the Military Police Force (MPs) during World War I. They were blessed with one son, Max (or Mack), still living, I believe. Daughter Truly married a Mr. J.T. Hill. I've not been able to locate her as of yet. My kindest Thanks to Edie Doepel for sending me a copy of Ulysis's obituary showing the married names of her daughters. As of this date, I still need to locate her sisters Undine, b.April 1892, and Elva Acte, b.Sept 1894. Elva married later in life, having been a school teacher for many years. I know she lived with family members for a time, need to go thru many records, but at least now more of her family (and mine!) are showing on this dear lady's memorial.
