He was born January 28, 1922 in Winfred, South Dakota, to Francis J. and Florence J. (Borah) Neterval. In 1935 he moved with his family to the family farm at rural Evansville and graduated from the Evansville High School in 1940. Virgil farmed with his father until he joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 1946. Following his discharge from the military in 1948, he returned to Evansville to continue farming.
On November 5, 1949, he married Colleen Tilleskjor at the First Baptist Church in Alexandria.
He retired from farming in 1985 but continued to live on the farm until November 1, 2001 when he moved to Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Evansville.
He was a member of the Evansville Legion where he served as Commander for 50 years. He enjoyed woodworking, visiting and drinking coffee with friends.
He is survived by his children: Nancy Neterval of Vienna, Austria; Kathy (Roger) Holtberg of Evansville; Dan (Joann) Neterval of Gilbert, AZ; Joe Neterval; and Mary (Kevin) Langlie both of Evansville; nine grandchildren: Bobbi (Mike) Kasper; Cody Holtberg, Nathan, Danielle, Arielle and Courtney Neterval; Josh, Hunter and Caitlin Langlie; and one great-grandson, Ryan Kasper. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Russell Neterval.
Funeral service was at 1 P.M. Tuesday at Calvary Covenant Church in Evansville with Reverand Nathan Langager officiating. Burial was in Mound Grove Cemetery, Evansville with military honors by Evansville American Legion.
