Herman John Affeldt was born in Germany, Nov. 5th, 1864, and was nine years old when his mother emigrated from her homeland to America taking her son with her. They settled in Chicago and later moved to Max, N. Dak., where John grew to manhood. Here he took a homestead and lived until 1904 when he came to Douglas county. He located at Forada where he opened a general store which he operated for seventeen years. He then located in Miltona where he bought and operated a small farm until 1943, when he retired and made his home in Alexandria.
On December 23rd, 1914, he was married to Mathilda Klingler. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Affeldt. They are: Dorothy (Mrs. Henry Engfer) of Alexandria; Delbert, Alexandria; Freddie, at home; Raymond, at home; Arthur of Alexandria, and Viola (Mrs. Loren Jacobson) of Alexandria. Surviving also is one brother, August, of Glenwood, and two grandchildren.
Mr. Affeldt was taken seriously ill Feb. 28th, and was removed to the hospital where he passed away early Friday morning, March 5th. He was at the time of his passing 83 years of age.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. and at the Zion Lutheran church at 2:00 p.m., Rev. A. C. Seltz officiating. Pallbearers were Carl Pommerenke, William Wunderlick, Edward Miller, Roy Barrows, Albert Zunker and Emil Zarbok. Interment was made in Kinkead.
