Clarence "Clem" Hammerschmidt, 69, 1307 General Custer, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at the Hays Medical Center. He was born May 6, 1932, at Hays to Otto and Mathilda (Schmidt) Hammerschmidt.

He graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays in 1950. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He married Bernita Glassman on June 18, 1952, in Hays.

He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1325, American Legion and Jaycees, all of Hays. He and his wife helped to organize the Central Plains Association for Retarded Citizens. He was charter president and still an active member. He helped organize the Early Childhood Development Center and also helped to organize and served on the board of the H.B. Reed Center and Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas and still served as an honorary board member.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Terry, Hays, and Mark, Williamsburg, Va.; two daughters, Sue O'Connor and Lori Ann Schmidt, both of Hays; a brother, Adolph, Hays; a sister, Frances Rupp, Hays; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father David Metz and the Rev. William Miller officiating; burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, with military honors by the Hays American Legion. There will be a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 6 p.m., a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas.
