Adolph J. Hammerschmidt, 84, of Hays, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born March 10, 1926, in Catherine, to Otto and Mathilda Schmidt Hammerschmidt.
On June 16, 1948, he married Alfreda Karlin. She survives.

Mr. Hammerschmidt was employed by Felten, Graves and ANR Freight Lines for 38 years. After retirement, he was a driver for Western Kansas Urological Associates and later worked as a driver for Mid Kansas Auction. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Stephen Hammerschmidt of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Lisa Staab and Tammy Gottschalk, both of Holcomb; a sister, Frances Rupp of Hays; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter, Becky; a great-grandson; his parents; and a brother, Clem Hammerschmidt.

Funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, followed by a military graveside service at St. Joseph Cemetery.
