Son of Benjamin Hopkins & Sarah Palmer. They left RI in 1779 when the British destroyed their home and came to Dutchess Co., NY just before John was born.

Brother of Gilbert P. Hopkins, guardian of John's minor children after his death.

John was a Hicksite Quaker who married Mrs. Mary Brill Adriance, widow of Jacob T. Adriance (d1817), Oct. 30, 1819 at Hopewell Reformed Church, Dutchess Co., NY. She was a member of the Reformed Dutch Church. Charles P. Adriance was a witness to John Hopkins' will which was probated June 20, 1838.
